Artist Spotlight: Karla Lo

One of my favorite parts of having a small business, is the ability to work with fellow artists and support their work.

I’m always scouring the internet for artists I love and came across the cutest little macaroon stickers for The Humble Bee Shoppe bakery in Winston-Salem, NC. The artist was Karla Lo, or Lo as she’s called, and I was eager to ask her to create something for me.

I was struck by how quickly Lo worked and could feel her passion and dedication to her art immediately.

Lo has created a few designs for me now and I wanted to do a little Q&A with her to learn a little more about her!

What’s your dream job?

When I was younger, throughout middle/high school I always struggled with this question. There was this pressure of needing to know the answer so you can choose a major for college. For the life of me I could not decide. I wanted to be so many things and still do. So I honestly don’t have a dream job but definitely dream goals that I hope to achieve!

Are you a plant lover or plant killer? Or both!

Both! I cannot keep one alive but they fascinate me. 90% of what we eat comes from only about 30 plants. Did you know you could actually watch bamboo grow- it grows that fast!!

How did you get into illustration and creating work for others?

I have ALWAYS had a love for art. I started painting in high school with acrylics and oils. Out of high school I started working with a gallery in Charlotte producing various works in a timely manner. I loved it and was grateful for it. COVID came and I needed a change, a challenge. A friend of mine is actually the one who suggested I’d go digital. So I did!

Favorite plant or wishlist plant?

Wishlist plant is definitely a Venus flytrap. Small but mighty.

What’s your favorite thing to illustrate?

Characters or cartoons! You can add so much personality to each individual.

What’s your favorite thing to give as a gift?

Gift giving is my love language. Those with sentimental value are usually what I strive for. My friends know me for putting any and every important dates on my calendar to celebrate in the future.

Best piece of advice you’d give to fellow artists?

Keep practicing, keep setting goals.
